It appeared that something of the order of 100 countries would want to subscribe to the new Basel II accord, but several significant newer markets had to acknowledge that it would be several years before they were ready.

11 Latin American countries that have agreed to implement the Basel II reforms, one country aims to comply with all standards in 2006, five from 2007 to 2009, and five after 2010.

Chile, Mexico and Brazil remain the region's most advanced in incorporating Basel II reforms.

Australia and Singapore have made the best progress among the region's banking systems on Basel II, while there is good progress in other markets, including Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan.

China, Thailand and Malaysia are opting for a more gradual implementation of Basel II.
